Karr Arrested for JonBenet Ramsey Murder Three Years AgoOn August 16th 2006, after ten long years, an arrest was finally made in the 1996 murder case of JonBenet Ramsey. Many felt a sense of relief while others felt doubt. In the end, Karr was released. Many were pleased that the "charade" was finally over. Others felt his release was a mistake with certain members of the Ramsey family voicing their disappointment of how quickly the case against Karr vaporized.
INTERNATIONAL (Lei Sussurra) August 27, 2009 -- In a highly publicized arrest, John Mark Karr seemed freakishly displayed before the public in what onlookers could describe only as a strange showcase atmosphere of the most inappropriate proportion, especially in light of the circumstances the arrest surrounded. Is it possible that this chaotic scene distracted attention from the seriousness of this arrest or was Karr simply a delusional liar? It begs to be asked why any person would wish to claim such an atrocious act as if it were an honor to be had. Now that three years have passed, is it possible without all the hype of the media that a look back might present more questions? Can it be established that the only individual ever arrested as the prime suspect of a ten year old murder case could be completely innocent? His innocence is definitely hoped to be a guarantee by the law enforcement agencies that released him and a public that seems to fear him.
Karr was released based on lack of evidence. Recently, he revealed, "I stopped cooperating with law enforcement before I left Thailand for my extradition to the U.S. When I found that they were determined to get the death penalty for me, self-preservation kicked in. At that point, I either stopped answering their questions or led them to a dead end."
Karr further revealed that he withheld physical evidence. "They knew I had items that I took on that night. I had written prior to my arrest that they were hidden away. I was and continue to be very protective of these sentimental pieces. It's not a matter of withholding evidence in that light. I am still asked for those items."
If all the above is true, this might make a difference in what law enforcement referred to as lack of evidence. Could this have been instead lack of cooperation on the part of Karr? Does Karr's statement, "I am still asked for those items", lead us to believe that he is still talking to law enforcement three years later and if so, why?
The general consensus has been that Karr was delusional and had created this complicated plan in his mind. The media discovered that his mother had been institutionalized for mental illness which easily leads to the conclusion that his mother's illness was passed on to him. This fact alone could explain what many defined as Karr's bizarre behavior. Karr had no history, however, of creating enormous lies in his 41 years past. There was no evidence of mental illness directly linked to Karr himself. Karr was taken from his mother completely at the young age of four. Still it remains that it is highly plausible that a man from a background of mental illness on the part of his mother might display a break with reality himself.
It was also a held opinion that Karr was scheming to profit from his confession of killing a child. Unfortunately for Karr, there would have been an impossibility to reap the benefits of those profits if in prison for life or awaiting an execution on death row. Still the possibility of one creating such a sensation to profit from book sales or film rights seems a reasonable conclusion.
In the case of Karr's story, whether real or made up, there is no witness to support his claim nor is there a connection to a small portion of DNA found at the scene of the crime to prove his story was true. Regardless, some experts seem convinced that the current DNA should not be considered at all. Handwriting experts link Karr based on a ransom note left at the scene of the crime yet they contend that this only proves that Karr wrote the note but does not prove that he murdered the Ramsey girl. There has also surfaced video footage surrounding JonBenet Ramsey at various public events with figures who some think resemble Karr.
At the very least, the people of the State of Colorado have a right to know why such an enormous commotion was made over Karr three years ago. It is the right of the people to understand what convinced a judge to issue a warrant for this person's arrest along with an expensive extradition that would not end until Karr was in Boulder custody. Why was there such persistence by the Boulder District Attorney's Office to pursue a man that they later with ease discounted as a delusional liar? Can the public settle for the answers that were given as to the explanation for releasing Karr or was there more? If Karr's recent statements are true, why do some secretly continue to talk to Karr about a murder he did not commit? If the question no longer remains whether Karr was a delusional liar or the real killer, there still persists a need for a more detailed explanation of his arrest and extradition and a further explanation for his ultimate release.
